What are the current European welfare tendencies and regulations?

Animal Welfare Council defined animal welfare in terms of 5 freedoms:

  1. from hunger and thirst
  2. from discomfort
  3. from pain, injury and disease
  4. to express normal behavior
  5. from fear and distress

These are:

  1. good feeding (absence of prolonged hunger and thirst);
  2. good housing (comfort around resting, thermal comfort, ease of movement);
  3. good health (absence of injuries, absence of disease, absence of pain induced by management procedures);
  4. appropriate behaviour (expression of social behaviors, expression of other behaviors’, good human-animal relationship, positive emotional state).

There is a great number of varying interpretations of farm animal welfare, incompleteness, but also opposing claims.” (Аleksandar Pavličević et all. 2019)

How does Dergall reply to the aforementioned?

1.

from hunger and thirstIndirectly, by immediate stopage of the feeding behaviour of the red mites, it will reduce the FCR (feed conversion ratio). Also, by controlling the parasitism, the normal feeding and drinking behavior is recovered / reestablished.

2.

from discomfortDiscomfort caused by bloodsucking arthropods can consist of each or all of the following: insomnia, wounds and lacerations, increase of airborne dust, agitation of the flock, chronic anemia, feather picking, cannibalism, deplumatiom ect., by the immediate stoppage of mite feeding behavior and wound patching, blocking bacterial proliferation on the wounds and environment. Better rest during night and improved wound healing also promoting improved wound healing. Trough the consequent blood volume stabilization.

3.

from pain, injury and diseaseDergall, trough correct application, will immediately disrupt mite feeding behaviour, thus reducing the appearance of painful and hemorrhagic new wounds and stopping the spread of diseases in which Dermanyssus plays the role of vector.

4.

to express normal behaviorSome of the most common behaviour changes are: feather picking and insomnia, manifested through excessive activity during night when birds should be resting. Dergall provides relief from all of those.

5.

from fear and distressIt can be easily said that it is not a matter of fear as birds do not understand the colonial type of parasitism caused by the intensive farming but it provides relief from all of the abovementioned distress factors.
